FLYING IN / TO FINLAND

This tutorial is a brief summary for foreign pilots flying to / in Finland.

  1. Please download the appropriate charts from FINAVIAs eAIP. Finavia provides up-to-date aeronautical charts on their eAIP-webpages: FINAVIA eAIP http://www.ais.fi/ais/eaip/en/

If for some reason you do not have the charts, please inform ATC about it (for example in flight plan remarks field).

  2. Please File an appropriate flight plan via file FPL. Filing fpl tells your intentions to controllers. FPL can be filed days before actual flight and you might get better ATC coverage. You can check predefined routes from our EURoute user interface.

  3. Do not accept ATC-clearance that you really can NOT fly. As everywhere, if you are not familiar or comfortable with a procedure or clearance, tell the ATC about it and you will get an alternative clearance.

  4. Read the Standard Instrument Departure (SID) charts carefully. The SIDs from Helsinki-Vantaa (EFHK) instruct you to contact Helsinki Radar (EFHK_APP) on 119.10 or 128.850 when airborne. Accepting a clearance with a SID also means you have to obey to all the SID-specific instructions, not just the route and altitudes. Check Frequency with ATC.

  5. There are several aerodromes with no radar-service available in Finland.
The traffic flow is handled by different procedures (track, DME distance, DME-arc) Familiarize yourself with these methods if you are flying on such an aerodrome. In some cases you may also receive radar vectoring even if it would not be possible in real life.

  6. On initial contact report any possible differences from normal operations (no charts, need vectors, newbie/student).

  7. Please check preferred sceneries for VATSIM operations in Finland. These sceneries will provide best visual effects available in the area of Finland. To preferred sceneries download page!
